Blue Line Extends to Emerson Park: February 24

Blue Line MetroLink trains will resume service to the Emerson Park MetroLink Station beginning on Monday, February 24.

Thank you for your patience over the last month. Since mid-January, Blue Line MetroLink trains have only operated between the Shrewsbury and Forest Park-DeBaliviere Stations as a safety precaution due to ground instability near the tracks in Illinois.

This new service plan was developed to extend Blue Line MetroLink service and reduce delays and overcrowding, while maintaining safe operations.

MetroLink Service Details | Effective February 24

  • Red Line trains will operate between Lambert Airport and Shiloh-Scott MetroLink Stations.
  • Blue Line trains will operate between Shrewsbury-Lansdowne I-44 and Emerson Park MetroLink Stations.
  • Blue Line customers will not need to transfer to a Red Line train at the Forest Park-DeBaliviere Station. Only Blue Line customers traveling east of Emerson Park Station will need to transfer to a Red Line train to continue their trip.
  • Some MetroLink schedules have minor changes, please doublecheck the new schedules below to see if times for your MetroLink trip have changed.

Why are Blue Line trains only going to Emerson Park Station?

Our team has been working to develop an operations plan that would extend Blue Line trains and provide improved service for customers, while maintaining necessary single-track operations. Emerson Park Station is the farthest Blue Line service can be extended east without causing bottlenecks and delays on the system.

Blue Line trains normally operate between the Shrewsbury and Fairview Heights MetroLink Stations. During some single-track operations, it is sometimes necessary to limit Blue Line service to between Shrewsbury and Forest Park to avoid delays, which is what has been in place since mid-January.

What is happening with ground instability?

There is a small area near the MetroLink tracks in Illinois that has shown some instability as a result of precipitation and cycles of freezing and thawing. It is safe to operate MetroLink trains through this area, but they are operating on a single track as a precaution. Metro Engineering teams are continuously monitoring ground conditions and will begin a project to permanently fix the instability later this year.
