Flashback Friday
Return to BlogFlashback Friday!
Today’s photo looks at the first 1.7 mile stretch of St. Louis’ new Third Street Highway in the mid-1950s. The sign on the bus reads, “Express South Grand.”
A streetcar is running south on Broadway about to pass under the highway. This photo was likely shot from the MacArthur Bridge.
Have a great weekend!

Flashback
It’s nice to see pictures of the “old look” buses, like the one shown in the photo. They bring back fund memories of a truly successful transit system that once existed in St. Louis, that was efficient and dependable, and using buses that were attractive in appearance, but not exactly state-of-the-art.
The “Express South Grand” was the express component of the old #105 Gravois route.
The bus is a 3600 or 3700, which were longer than the previous GMC buses. After these came the first of the GMC new look buses, the 3800s, which were the last buses purchased by St. Louis Public Service Co.
