Food Drive to Benefit Federal Workers to be Held Next Week

Return to Blog

Volunteers organize fruit and canned food at food bank.

Metro Transit, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 788 (which represents Metro Transit operators and other employees), the St. Louis County Police MetroLink Unit, the St. Clair County Transit District and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department are holding a food drive next week to support federal workers in the St. Louis region who have been impacted by the partial government shutdown.

The food drive is in partnership with St. Louis Area Foodbank, which will make the donations of food and other essential items available to federal workers and others in need in the bi-state area.

“Even with today’s announcement that the federal government will temporarily reopen, we know that many of the federal workers in the St. Louis region will continue to struggle with the negative effects of the government shutdown,” said Jessica Mefford-Miller, Executive Director of Metro Transit. “This food drive is an opportunity for Metro and our partners to support our community and help provide assistance to these federal employees and their families, who are our neighbors and our customers, in their time of need.”

“When Metro and Local 788 work together to help the community, everyone wins,” said Catina Wilson, ATU Local 788 Vice President. “We wanted to give back by helping our customers who are our friends, and in some cases, the government workers are our family members.”

Food donations will be collected at several Metro Transit centers on January 28 and January 29. In addition, the public is invited to bring food drive donations to the ATU Local 788 Union Hall located at 1611 South Broadway in St. Louis on February 2 from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m.
